It is the root of the Wasabi plant which is used for a condiment, traditionally in Japanese cuisine. It is very hot, though not like chili which stimulates the tongue, rather Wasabi stimulates the nasal passages, clearing them out. It can either be purchased dried, in a powdered form, or fresh as the whole root.
