Lets have a look at this season:
During summer temperatures increase and depending where you live rainfall decreases, so you will be looking to plant crops resistant to these harsher conditions. If you live in the cooler to moderate temperature areas there will be a greater variety of plants to choose from, it is always best, if you are unsure, to talk with your local nursery, as they will surely help and guide you.
So what can you grow in Summer?
HERBS | basil, chives, coriander, fennel, rosemary, lovage, mint, parsley and tarragon.
FRUIT & VEGETABLES | beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chicory, chilli, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, eggplant, endive, kohlrabi, leek, lettuce, okra, parsnip, potato, radish, rhubarb, shallots, silver beet, spring onion, sweet corn, sweet potato and zucchini.
1. Asparagus crowns.
2. Composted manure
3. Mulch
1. Prepare the site - it should have lots of sun and be well drained. Dig in sufficient composted manure.
2. Plant the crowns - with the buds pointing upwards, 45cm apart and 5cm below the surface.
3. Cultivate the crowns - cover with mulch and allow to grow feeding with water regularly
4. Harvest - DO NOT harvest in the first year, allow to grow out, to develop a strong root system. Harvest in the second year, the more you look after the plant the longer it will produce quality asparagus.
